George Preston Memorial Business
Person of the Year:
Phil Jackman ~ Valley Traffic Systems Inc.
Humble. Quiet. Strong. Phil can best be described as the quiet, humble saviour of many charities and organizations in Langley. From his customers to his loyal staff, the same comment is consistently made, “Phil is always one of the first people to step up and help.” Phil started Valley Traffic Systems in 1997, operating as a small alternative traffic control company, and since that time has grown the company into the premier traffic management and traffic control providers in all of Western Canada. Through the growth of his company, Phil has never forgotten where he came from and he is constantly giving back to the community. Phil has supported local minor hockey teams and associations, Cops for Cancer, Basics for Babies, Langley Animal Protection Society, Make a Wish Foundation and too many other organizations and charities to mention. Most recently, Phil stepped up to the plate with a $100,000.00 donation to the Langley Hospital Foundation. When researching details on Phil as a business owner, the number one comment was, “Phil has a Heart of Gold and never ever wants any recognition for the amazing things that he does.” It is our pleasure to acknowledge all that Phil Jackman has accomplished with his business and his philanthropy. Congratulations Phil on being named the 2016 George Preston Business Person of the Year.
Entrepreneur of the Year:
Taylor Byrom ~ TAYLORHART.DESIGNS
Taylor believes that ALL children should be seen for their personality and not their illness. Taylor has thoughtfully designed and handmade clothing while keeping in mind the specific medical needs of each child. She believes that the clothing should complement a child’s needs, not restrict them. Taylor started the Jolie Hart line of clothing during her graduating year at KPU and identified a need and want for adaptive clothing. She has made this her passion and in doing so, has helped children with illnesses and disabilities around the world. It stands out that Taylor has built a company based upon integrity, innovation and the needs of her customers. The mantra at Jolie Hart is Function – to meet the special medical needs of our children; Style – mainstream, on trend designs that blend on the playground, and Wellness – clothing that increases a child’s self-esteem which can give a sense of freedom so kids can just be kids.

They strive to go above and beyond to provide family centered programs and services while maintaining excellent service and care to their clients. In 2016, Langley Lodge achieved the top honors of Accreditation with Exemplary Standing in a decision by Accreditation Canada. “Langley Lodge has gone beyond the requirements of the accreditation program and demonstrates excellence in quality improvement.” As well as maintaining high service standards, the Society, its Board and staff have created programs to reach out to those in our community that may be isolated or at-risk in order to provide them with specialized services that would otherwise limit or restrict their ability to engage or participate in local community activities. They go on to say, “It takes a village to form and sustain a life. Langley Lodge is a village. It is a huge part of our community, it is involved, it is encompassing, it is provisional and most of all it, is home.”

Otter Farm & Home Cooperative
Over the past 5 years Otter Co-op has worked hard to reduce its environmental impact while maintaining its product quality and customer service. They have become industry leaders by reducing their energy use in such ways as, switching from halogen lighting to T8, installing timers and motion sensors, and adding capacitors to all motors in the feed division. Going above industry standards creating a food waste program throughout the entire company, from the gas bars, feed division and the retail centre, this program largely reduces the amount of waste sent to the landfill. Recycling not just the basics, their program includes shrink wrap and other materials, as well as a full feed recycling program that reduces waste and harmful greenhouse gasses. Taking it one step further, Otter has included these initiatives in their Corporate Guiding Statements to provide future sustainability and environmental stewardship. Otter Farm and Home Co-operative is a true environmental champion in our community!
